In the mid-nineties, Chloride Industries Limited was renamed as Exide Industries Limited (EIL). A company that had set up shop as an import house in the nineteen twenties transformed into EIL - the largest battery and power solution providing company in India.

Exide Industries Limited is a market leader. It is a brand that is forever young at heart and is constantly evolving at every step to provide power related solutions to the entire spectrum of the industry - be it automobiles, home UPS, inverters, defence or any other sector. A superb distribution network and an unmatched quality of service make it miles ahead. Today, it is an established fact that 7 out of 10* new vehicles move on Exide. Because, India moves on Exide.

Significant Milestones

The following are the milestones that the company has reached in a journey that spans across decades.

  • 1920 - Chloride Electrical Storage Co. (CESCO), UK, set up trading operations in India as an Import House.
  • 1946 - The first factory in Shyamnagar, West Bengal became operational.
  • 1969 - The second factory came up in Chinchwad, Pune.
  • 1976 - R & D centre got established in Kolkata.
  • 1981 - The third factory took shape in Haldia, West Bengal.
  • 1994 - The technical collaboration with Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of the Hitachi Group.
  • 1995 - A defining moment when Chloride Industries Ltd. got renamed as Exide Industries Ltd.
  • 1997 - The fourth factory began operations in Hosur, TamilNadu.
  • 1998 - EIL took over the industrial undertakings of Standard Batteries Ltd.
  • 2000 - A significant year that marked the 100% acquisition of CBSEA Singapore and 49% acquisition of ABM (Ceylon), Sri Lanka.
  • 2003 - A new plant got commissioned at Bawal, Haryana.
  • 2004 - Increased ABM Ceylon holding to 61%.
  • 2005 - A 30% acquisition of Exide Life Insurance Company Limited.
  • 2007 - The Company increases shareholding to 100% in Chloride Power Systems and Solutions Limited.
  • 2008 - EIL acquired 51% shares of Chloride Alloys India Limited. An Export Plant was setup in Haldia.
  • 2010 - The company increased shareholding to 100% in Chloride Alloys India Limited. The same year, Ahmednagar facility for MC batteries commenced production.
  • 2011 - The Company acquires the first home UPS manufacturing facility at Roorkee.
  • 2012 - EIL acquired the Second Home UPS manufacturing facility at Haridwar. Espex batteries, UK, became a wholly owned subsidiary during the same year.
  • 2013 - The Company acquired remaining 50% shareholding in Exide Life Insurance Company Limited.
